Stu Duvall

Stu Duvall came to VAS today.
He is a great storyteller and had us hanging on his words.
He began by asking us for characters and settings to include in a story.
He drew an amazing picture to set the scene
He then created a story on-the-spot which included nearly all the ideas!
Great fun!

Fractions and Gummy Worms!

Today's maths challenge was to choose what fraction of a gummy worm students wanted to eat!

They could choose 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/10 or 1/20th of a gummy worm.

We then cut the gummy worms into that number of pieces:

Each group got to eat their choice.

Guess which group was smiling the most!

Technology Challenge

Room 16 had a class challenge to build the best plane using two pieces of paper, two straws, a paper-clip, some blue-tack and tape.
We had some novel designs with straws cut into pieces and taped along the wings, under the wings, in the centre...
... and they all flew!
Great job Room 16.

Trip to the Art Gallery

We had a fabulous trip to the Art Gallery on Tuesday.
We enjoyed three sessions.
Our first session was a guided tour of the gallery.
We looked at some art by South American artists.
We asked what story they were telling through their art.

Maria Nepomuceno

Grande Boca (Big Mouth)

This artwork includes an amazing number of orange beads

Ernesto Neto

Just like drops in time, nothing 2002

This aromatic work is made of spices!

We looked at a painting of Joseph and his brothers and made pipe-cleaner  people to show how the characters were sitting/standing.

In our second session we looked at John Pule's art -  Take These Walls With You When You Leave (1998. Oil on canvas), which tells the story of John Pule immigrating to New Zealand. Diana showed us how to plan our own artwork telling a story of a journey we have made.

In our third session we explored the gallery by ourselves.
Everyone loved the hands on section.
All in all, we had a great day.
It was a great start to our new topic:
What's the Story?
